An Introduction to the Tafsir of Munir al-Wahhab The Tafsir al-Munir was written by an unknown author, probably in the ninth century CE. It is at times attributed to Ahmad ibn Muhammad, Ahmad ibn Muhammad az-Zuhaili, or Ahmad ibn Salih. This work is divided into twelve books and has at its core a commentary on Surat al-Baqarah (2: 256) in which it's main subject matters are history of Islam and Hadith. The book was first printed in the year 1322H., and its subsequent editions were published in 1405H and 1413 H. It has been one of the most widely used Tafasirs since its initial publication, so much so that one can hardly find a scholar who has not read this work. The Tafsir al-Munir authorizes taking interest. The author(s) have also given an example of usury which is found in Surah al-An'am (6: 144). This shows that the Tafsir al-Munir has many issues with it. The author(s) have also endorsed taking interest, if only in the case of one who has not written down his capital. Ibn 'Abd al-Barr mentions this book twice in his book "Al-Ikhtisas" about the best practice in terms of four types of people, scholars are differentiated from non-scholars, leaders are differentiated from ordinary people, teachers are differentiated from students, and holy men are differentiated from common people. In the book "Tafsir al-Munir" by Muhammad Nawawi, a commentary of a section of Surah al-Baqarah, line 256 to line 258, was mentioned. In the above mentioned book, Muhammad Nawawi mentions that this section was taken from a work called "The Tafsir al-Munir". These factors have been used as evidence against the existence of any extant original manuscripts despite absence of any other reasonable explanation or observation which can give rise to such an idea. Many Muslim printed editions of the Tafsir al-Munir were published in different cities of the Ottoman Empire and later on in the Arab countries. eccc085e13
